To get you from sitting on the couch to sitting in your very own race car you will need a few things.
The first is the car, whether you wish to build your own car, let someone else do all the work of preparing a car or if you just want to dip your toes in with an arrive and drive package you will find the information to get you started here. With the car being prepared the next item to be prepared is yourself. This involves becoming a member of the SMRC, gaining your national B license and getting kitted out with the appropriate protection gear. |

BUy a Prepared Car
If you have decided that you want to own and run your own race car but don't have the facilities or knowledge to undertake building a race car one option is to buy a fully prepared car.
There are two options when doing this,
The first is to contact a specialist car builder who will supply you with a fresh car that has never been raced.
The second is to find someone who has decided to sell their race car. Their are usually cars for sale on the internet either on eBay or Pistonheads.
One great source of information is to attend a race meeting and talk to the guys and girls who are racing in the Scottish MX5 Cup. They may know someone who is selling a car or who can prepare a car for you.

car hire
An arrive and drive package is a great way of entering MX5 racing without the commitment and expense of acquiring a car of you own.
This usually entails hiring for either a race weekend or the entire season. this allows you to go racing with out worrying about the maintenance of the car or transport to and from the circuit. providers may also offer support over the race weekend if any issues occur with the car.
You may still need to obtain your race wear yourself.

Self build
You may have decided that you want to prepare your own MX5 race car, this may be to save some money or to enjoy the experience of preparing the car yourself.
This is a viable route for many as the majority of the work that is required can be achieved with some basic mechanical knowledge and tools. But one thing to remember is that this may take loger than you first expected. Even if you feel you cant carry out all the work there are people who will be able to carry out some of the bigger jobs for you, such as the roll cage installation. Check back here later as we hope to build a how to guide for the majority of jobs that are required to transform the road car to a race car. |
